Quick Questions and Answers

Whenever I discuss tort reform with nonlawyers, I always hear the same questions. So, I figured that those must be common questions, and I've decided to make a Q&A category with quick answers to those questions, along with links to more detailed answers.

What do the Letters T O R T stand for? is it a

"Tort" is not an acronym. It comes from the latin word "torquere", which means to twist or wrest aside. Presumably this means that the wrong committed has wrested aside or taken something from the victim of the tort (some right or property).

What is the average amount awarded to a plaintiff, who sued the V.A. hospital in washington state for medical negligence?
